Abstract

Background : Stroke is a health problem in all countries and one of the causes of death and disability. This condition requires serious attention from health workers so that the prevalence of stroke can be reduced or minimized by minimizing stroke risk factors. There are modifiable risk factors for stroke such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes mellitus, smoking, hyperlipidemia, activity, and non-modifiable factors such as age, gender, heredity, race, and geography.

Objective : to determine the determinants of stroke in RSUD Dr. Doris Sylvanus Palangka Raya

Methods : The design used in this research is a case-control study. The total sample size is 112 respondents, each 56 case samples and 56 control samples. Case samples were stroke patients who were treated at RSUD Dr. Doris Sylvanus Palangka Raya, while the control sample is a patient who is not being treated for stroke or cardiovascular disease.

Results : This study shows that the risk factors for stroke that have a significant relationship with the incidence of stroke in RSUD Dr. Doris Sylvanus Palangka Raya are hypertension (p=0.000), age (p=0.040), and obesity (0.011). Hypertension is a risk factor that has the most significant influence on the incidence of stroke. The risk of hypertensive patients is 524 times greater than patients who do not suffer from hypertension in Dr. Doris Sylvanus Palangka Raya (CI 95% = 5846.0-47.1).

Conclusion : The results of this study indicate the need for early screening of hypertensive patients in the community by health workers, and hypertensive patients to carry out routine examinations and treatment to prevent stroke events. Health education is routinely carried out by health workers in all health care settings to prevent stroke risk factors such as controlling blood pressure, obesity, and hyperlipidemia, especially over the age of 45 years.
