Abstract
Communication is a crucial element in nursing. Emotional intelligence is one a determinant factor for communication success. This study is an action research which aims to correct therapeutic communication ability of nursing students through training program of emotional intelligence.
Subject of this study is one class of 3rd semester students in Poltekkes Kemenkes Palangka Raya comprising of 48 students (26 female and 22 male) which were given training of emotional intelligence for two days. The training was given through speech, discussion, story telling, watching movies, games, and role play. Measurement of dependent variable was done by therapeutic communication to the subject with simulation patient in which took place before and after training in Nursing’s Laboratory Room. This study held from September to November 2013. Data was collected through training evaluation sheet from the subject and observer, observational sheet of therapeutic communication from researchers and reflection with the subject in the end of study.
Data analysis using t-test suggests an increase on average score of therapeutic communication from 79.77 into 103.49. Using pair sample test, there was found a very significant difference with t-statistics of 6.820 ; probability of alpha error (p) < 0.001. The hypothesis accepted shows that there is increase on therapeutic communication score after the subject receives emotional intelligence training. t-table score based on degree of freedom (df) of 49 with probability of alpha error (p) 0.05 (5%) is 2.009575 or 2.01, t-statistics (6.820) > t-table (2.01), as well as probability of alpha error (p) < 0.001. Reflection with the subject suggests five communication items which difficult to implement, i.e. greeting, introducing nurse’s name, call the patient with his/her own name, describes role and confidentiality. Evaluation of therapeutic communication using communication model adopted from US shows cultural bias when it applied in the context of local community. This study proposes modification on training module of emotional intelligence and evaluation model of therapeutic communication by local cultural transformation.
Keywords: emotional intelligence, therapeutic communication, cultural bias.
