Abstract
Introduction: Anemia in pregnant women remains one of the maternal health issues that contributes to an increased risk of low birth weight (LBW). Anemia during pregnancy can disrupt the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus, thereby affecting fetal growth and development. Based on data from dr. Doris Sylvanus General Hospital in Palangka Raya, cases of anemia in pregnant women and the incidence of LBW remain a concern in efforts to improve maternal and infant health. This study aims to analyze the relationship between anemia in pregnant women and the incidence of Low Birth Weight (LBW) at dr. Doris Sylvanus General Hospital in Palangka Raya. Methods: This study employed a quantitative method with an analytical observational design using a retrospective case-control approach. Research data were obtained from the medical records of mothers and infants at dr. Doris Sylvanus General Hospital in Palangka Raya for the period 2022– October 2025, with a sample size of 1,041 subjects. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate methods, specifically the Chi-Square test, with the assistance of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Results: The results of the study indicate a significant association between maternal anemia status and the incidence of LBW (p=0.000). Other variables significantly associated with the occurrence of LBW include gestational age (p=0.000), birth spacing (p=0.035), place of residence (p=0.003), history of antenatal care (p=0.000), history of anemia (p=0.025), multiple pregnancy (p=0.000), pregnancy complications (p=0.000), birth status of the infant (p=0.000), and intrauterine growth restriction (p=0.000). Meanwhile, age (p=0,845), parity (p=0,776), education (p=0,403), husband’s occupation (p=0,907), wife’s occupation (p=0,604), history of congenital disease (p=0,071), history of abortion (p=0,955), and history of previous LBW (p=0,470) did not show a significant association. Discussion: This study highlights the importance of early detection and management of anemia during pregnancy, as well as the optimization of antenatal care, as efforts to reduce the incidence of LBW.
