Abstract

Background : Dysmenorrhea is pain in the lower abdomen that is felt during menstruation. In Indonesia, the incidence of dysmenorrhea reaches 64.25%. Risk factors for someone experiencing dysmenorrhea are calcium intake, menstrual cycle, age of menarche, length of menstruation, family history of dysmenorrhea and BMI.

Objective : To determine the relationship and effect of calcium intake on the incidence of dysmenorrhea College Students in Poltekkes Kemenkes Palangka Raya.

Methods : This research uses an observational analytic type of research using a case-control design. The number of sample cases: control is 1:1, which is 64:64. Sampling was done by Random Sampling. Data on sample characteristics, incidence of dysmenorrhea and risk factors were obtained using a questionnaire via google form. Data analysis used Chi Square statistical test, Risk Prevalence with 95% confidence interval (CI).

Results : The results showed that 9 (18.8%) female students with sufficient calcium experienced dysmenorrhea, while from 80 female students who lacked calcium, there were 55 (68.8%) female students who experienced dysmenorrhea pain. The results of the Chi Square test showed a significant relationship between calcium intake and dysmenorrhea (p-value = 0.000) and it was found that female students who lack calcium have a 9.533 times risk of experiencing pain compared to female students with sufficient calcium.

Conclusion : Based on the results of the study, there is a relationship and effect of calcium intake on dysmenorrhea.

Suggestion : It is recommended for adolescents to consume foods that are high calcium to prevent dysmenorrhea.
