Abstract
One of the menstrual problems most often experienced by young women is dysmenorrhea, which is pain in the lower abdomen during menstruation without any changes to the genitals. The high morbidity rate of primary dysmenorrhea receives little attention from the medical world, because many women areconditioned to accept the pain as something normal, psychological in nature even though it hinders their daily activities and reduces the quality of women's lives. To determine the relationship between exposure to cigarette smoke, body mass index (BMI), and haemoglobin levels on the incidence of dysmenorrhea. This research uses an analytical observation method with a cross sectional approach. In this study, the sample used was girl adolescents from MAN KotaPalangka Raya. The research instruments used were fill-in sheets and questionnaires. Data analysis was carried out using the Chi Square test. The statistical test results showed that the majority of respondents were in the exposed category, 53 respondents were exposed to cigarette smoke and 45 respondents (84.9%) experienced dysmenorrhea. In the body mass index (BMI) variable, most were in the normal category (18.5 - 25.0), as many as 79 respondents (100%) had body mass index (BMI) in the normal category (18.5-25.0) and 67 respondents (84.8%) experienced dysmenorrhea. For the haemoglobin level variable, the majority were in the anemia category (<12 gr/dl) as many as 72 respondents (100%) had haemoglobin levels <12 gr/dl and 67 respondents (93.1%) experienced dysmenorrhea. The results of statistical tests showed that there was a significant relationship between body mass index (p=0.001) and haemoglobin levels (p=0.000) on the incidence of dysmenorrhea, and there was no significant relationship between exposure to cigarette smoke (p=0.05) on the incidence of dysmenorrhea. Therefore, to avoid dysmenorrhea, adolescents can exercise regularly, maintain nutritional patterns both at school and outside of school, such as avoiding consuming junk food and always consuming foods that contain iron.
